Washington Asbestos Renovation Checklist

Know what to gather.
Know what to ask.

Build a useful brief before an asbestos assessment or renovation. Choose what you know; “not sure” is a useful answer too.

For homes and buildings in the Puget Sound area. If your property is elsewhere in Washington or on tribal land, the checklist starts by helping you find the appropriate authority.

Use the Texas checklist
01 Your project
02 Materials and work areas

Select the materials your project may affect. This does not identify asbestos.

Use what you already know. Do not disturb material, enter an affected area or collect a sample to complete this checklist.

03 Existing records

Keep the actual report to share with your assessor. No upload is needed here.

Before you begin

What changes in Washington?

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency distinguishes owner-occupied single-family renovation from demolition and other occupancies. Confirm the survey scope, notification requirements and responsible authority for the actual address. County alone does not settle tribal-land jurisdiction.

What the checklist cannot tell you

Appearance and a building’s age cannot confirm asbestos content. Material assessment and the limits of the proposed work need to be reviewed together. If a project changes, ask whether its existing survey still covers the work.
